Canadian passport & visa photo requirements

Canadian passport photos are uniquely 50×70 mm — taller than the 35×45 mm formats used across much of Europe. IRCC specifies 31–36 mm chin-to-crown on that 70 mm height, which produces a visibly smaller head than UK or Schengen crops. Visa and temporary-resident applications typically use 35×45 mm instead. Two sizes, one country

  • Canadian Passport — 50×70 mm, white background, 31–36 mm chin-to-crown
  • Canadian Visa / TRV — 35×45 mm, white or light background, standard biometric head band

Where Canadians get rejected

Using a 35×45 mm crop for a passport renewal is the most common mistake. Photo studios in border cities sometimes default to US 2×2 or EU 35×45 — always confirm the document type first.
